Musée Cernuschi, the museum of Asian arts of the city of Paris, opens its first exhibition in China at Bund One Museum in Shanghai
The Journey of Ink: Modern and Contemporary Chinese Paintings from the Musée Cernuschi officially opened in Shanghai on September 5th. 89 exceptional artworks from the collections of the Asian art museum of the city of Paris, one of the most important Asian arts museums in Europe, are now on view at Bund One Art Museum, until January 5th, 2025. MB Projects is very proud to have introduced this exhibition in China and to have been instrumental in its organization.
The Journey of Ink is the Musée Cernuschi’s first exhibition in China, as well as the first large-scale overseas collection of original Chinese paintings ever shown in the country. The exhibition is curated by Eric Lefebvre, Director and General Curator of Heritage of the Musée Cernuschi, and Mael Bellec, Chief curator in charge of Chinese and Korean collections of the Musée Cernuschi.
Divided into nine sections, the exhibit features 89 masterpieces by 36 renowned Chinese artists including Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Lin Fengmian, Chang Dai-Chien, Pu Ru, Fu Baoshi, Xie Zhiliu, Chang Yu, Pan Yuliang and Zao Wou Ki, charting the development of ink painting over the last century. The narrative arc spans from early modernist experiments at the dawn of the 20th century, through the enthusiasm for study in France during the 1920s and 1930s, to creative adaptations during wartime relocations and the post-war reintegration of Chinese artists into the international art scene. It concludes with a focus on the museum’s recent acquisitions that reflect contemporary ink practices.
In addition to the masterpieces, the exhibition is enriched with multimedia displays and archival materials, providing dynamic insights into the evolving techniques of ink painting and chronicling the museum’s history of exhibitions and acquisitions.
Commemorating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, The Journey of Ink seeks to extend this centennial journey of cultural and artistic exchange, fostering new narratives in the intertwined histories of Chinese and French art.
